Every biometric trades accuracy against convenience. Fingerprints are cheap and familiar but need contact and wear down over time; face recognition is contactless and works at a distance but is sensitive to pose, lighting and look-alikes. The iris sits at the high-accuracy end — at the cost of a cooperative, close-range capture.

The reason is information content: the iris encodes far more independent detail than a fingerprint or a face, so the chance of two different people matching by accident is extremely small.

NIST’s independent IREX IX evaluation (2018) shows the accuracy class. Over hundreds of thousands of field images, the best one-to-many matcher reached a false-negative identification rate near 0.0067 (≈1 in 150) at a false-positive rate of 1 in 1,000 against a 160,000-person gallery; the best one-to-one matcher reached a false-non-match rate near 0.0057 at a false-match rate of 1 in 100,000.

Those are the best — not typical — matchers in that test, and the figures illustrate iris’ accuracy class rather than today’s record (NIST’s ongoing IREX 10 tracks newer leaders). The practical takeaway: iris excels where certainty matters and a brief, cooperative look into a camera is acceptable.
